The Spirit of Small Town America
It’s
a beautiful May Saturday and you’re trying to decide what to do for the day.
If it’s May 17th we have the answer – Wakefield’s Pride Day with “The Spirit
of Small Town America” as its theme.
From 9:00 – 3:00 the town will open its arms to feed and entertain you.
Begin by signing up for the 5K Road Race at the Paul School. Start time is
8:30. OR, take in the Pancake Breakfast served by the Heritage Commission at
the Pub from 7:30 – 9:00.
While checking out all the booths don’t forget to go down High Street to the
Gafney Library. The first 100 visitors will take away a bag of goodies. Back
at the corner of the main street stop at the Town Hall where 2 Silent
Auctions will be set up on the second floor, for St. John’s Community Day
School and for Wakefield Projects Inc.
Turntable Park will be the site of ongoing entertainment including a granite
splitting demo by Phil Twombley. Right at the tracks next to Lino’s
Restaurant you can get up to explore a Train Engine and a Caboose.
Two new events are the Pie Eating Contest at 10:30 and a Hula Hoop Contest
at 1:30 both at Lovell Lake Food Center. And, a new Barbershop Quartet
called “Rewind” will wander the town singing your favorites.
As usual, the Citizen of the Year, the Boston Post Cane recipient, the
Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Winners and the Prince and Princess will be
introduced prior to the Parade at noon. All those bearded men running around
town, The Bearded Wonders, will be clean shaven by Personal Cut at 1:00.
The day ends with a Lasagna Dinner at the Public Safety Building hosted by
the Wakefield Fire Association from 5-7 p.m. followed by the Greater
Wakefield Challenge at 6:30 at the Paul School. Those who saw local teams
compete last year will again welcome Mark Ericson as the perfect emcee. It
has replaced the talent show and we need as many teams as you can put
together as friends or organizations to win a cash prize to donate to your
favorite charity.
Put
May 17th on your calendar!
